ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that a comprehensive plan has been chalked out for the relief and rehabilitation of flood affected people.

In his opening remarks at the federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad Wednesday, he said the devastating floods have inflicted losses to different sectors of the economy to the tune of about forty three billion dollars and the government will mobilize all internal and external resources for the reconstruction of affected areas.

The prime minister said that under the plan, the relief operation which earlier was to continue up to 31st of October is now likely to prolong up to six months. Early recovery process will be completed by 30th December by the government in cooperation with other stakeholders.

Prime Minister Gilani said that the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank will conduct damage and need assessment survey by the 30th of this month. He said the government will undertake resource mobilization plan which will continue till the culmination of relief and reconstruction process.

The prime minister said that the economic affairs division will also organize a donors conference to be held in late October or November.

He said that the government is also planning to build small and medium size dams and construction of Diamer Basha dam will be prioritized.

The prime minister said the natural calamity calls for gigantic efforts on the part of the government to confront the situation and bail the economy out of the crisis. He said that priorities will be predetermined and expenditures cut down for the rehabilitation of flood victims.

He said the federal government will work in cohesion with the provincial governments, international donors and national NGOs to make lives easlier for the flood affected people.
